20 Estampas de Mexico

20 Mexican Sketches
Stylistic Studies for solo guitar

<>The 20 Sketches of Mexico were suggested by Dean Kamei of GSP. These 20 little pieces were not written as studies as such, like those of Sor, Villa-Lobos, or Brouwer, to mention a few. They are arranged progressively in order of difficulty, but are not intended to be a manual of technical formulas. They are intended for young guitarists who will become acquainted with some traditional Mexican rhythms and musical forms. They are written in different tonalities, to suggest as much as possible, the distinct ambience of these typical places in my country.

 Julio Cesar Oliva (Mexico, 2002)

"These very inventive and entertaining compositions were not written as study pieces as such, rather their purpose is to illustrate some of the lyrical traditional Mexican rhythmic and musical vaireties which has been passed down over the years all composed with an innate authority and skill.

The 20 pieces throughout this collection all have brief programme notes about them and are musically varied enough to easily assemble several small 'sets' for performance purposes. The works are given in progressive order of difficulty&the presentation throughtout is excellent. Recommended." Steve Marsh, Classical Guitar Magazine

"...for young players who wish to become more acquainted with some traditional Mexican rhythms and musical forms. Written in different keys, each piece presents the distinct ambience of a typical Mexican location,,,a fine collection of interesting pieces...." Uros Dojcinovic, Soundboard Magazine
