Fole Nordestino "Baiao"

(as recorded by Paulo on Lira Brasileira)

Fole Nordestino (Accordion of the Northeast) is a "Baião" dedicated to the great composer, accordionist, and singer Luiz Gonzaga, the famous king of the Baião. It was a very popular dance in the Northeast during the 19th century, and from 1946 onwards, Luiz Gonzaga played it on every radio station in Brazil. It became a universally recognized Brazilian musical style. The distinctive rhythm pattern of the Baião accompaniment is produced by a special use of the "bellow-shake" (traditional accordion technique).

Embaixador "Maracatu"

(as recorded by Paulo on Lira Brasileira)

Embaixador (Ambassador) is a Maracatu do Baque Virado, a complex variation of the Maracatu rhythm, dedicated to Antonio Madureira. Traditionally, "Maracatus" are carnival groups from Pernambuco called Nações (Nations): Nação da Cabinda Velha prevails in Old Recife while the Nação do Leão Coroado is foremost today. Among the Maracatu dancers we have o Rei (the King), a Rainha (the Queen), Príncipes (Princes), Damas de Honra (Ladies of Honor) and o Embaixador (the Ambassador) who is the standard bearer of the parade.

Embaixador is written in B Major and the guitar is tuned with the sixth string in B and fifth in F#, which extends the range, creating a bigger sound.

Emboscada "Xaxado"

(as recorded by Paulo on Lira Brasileira)

Emboscada (Ambush), dedicated to the pianist and composer Lelo Nazário, is a Xaxado inspired by the music of the northeastern countryside. It evokes a time when "Lampião", the leader the cangaceiros (bandits), used to ambush the police, whom they referred to as macacos (monkeys).

The Xaxado is a dance originally played by a very typical but unusual instrumental trio: sanfona (accordion), triângulo (triangle) and zabumba (bass drum). The players wear cangaceiros clothing and, while holding and playing their instruments, perform the choreography.

Sai Do Chao "Frevo"

(as recorded by Paulo on Lira Brasileira)

Sai do Chão (Leave the Ground) is a Frevo dedicated to the arranger musicologist, and dearest composer's friend Edgard Poças. It is a frenetic street dance from Pernambucos Carnival. With an energetic choreography similar to the Russian folk dances, the crowd in a waving motion starts "to boil" (Ferver) and, from this idea of boiling (fervura - people pronounce frevura in the Northeast) the name Frevo was born. Orchestras like Big Bands (Orquestra de Frevos do Recife is one of the most important) normally play the Frevo, and the motifs are always presented in exchanges between brass (trumpets, trombones) and reed (clarinets and saxophones...) instruments.

Estudos Litoraneos

No. 1 brisa do oceano Tempo de Bossa
No. 2 acalanto das aguas
No. 3 chuva e mar Tempo de Samba

(as recorded by Paulo on Lira Brasileira)

Estudos Litoreneos (Studies from near the sea) are arpeggio studies for guitar inspired by the sounds of nature - the wind, water, rain, and sea.

No. 1 - brisa do oceano (ocean breeze) is a Tempo de Bossa dedicated to the composer's dear friend Marco Antonio Guimaraes. The Bossa Nova pulse appears only in the melody inflection and its traditional rhythm pattern is implied in the arpeggio structure.

No. 2 - acalanto das aguas (lullaby of the waters) is dedicated to Paulo's wife Fernanda de Castro. In this study, harmonic overtones and fundamental sounds are used simultaneously, producing a very delicate effect, illustrating the peaceful movement of water.

No. 3 - chuva e mar (rain and sea) is a Tempo de Samba dedicated to the great Brazilian composer Heitor Villa-Lobos. Here again, there is no apparent Samba rhythm, it is merely suggested by the pulse of the arpeggio. The composer intended to describe a storm out at sea.
