Afro Sambas (with Monica Salamosa)

In 1962, Vinicius de Moraes met Baden Powell for the first time, forming one of the greatest partnerships in Brazilian popular music. Through this fruitful collaboration, emerged a masterpiece, a sort of opera based on the Afro-Brazilian mythology, in which the Orixas' (Gods) songs and rituals are told through sambas de roda, candomble rhythms and berimbau patterns.

At about this time, Baden visited Bahia where he went to the terreiros (ritual places) and listened to candomble songs. After returning to Rio de Janeiro, enfatuated by the magical sounds of the berimbaus, Baden was eager to rejoin Vinicius. Enchanted with this mysterious religion, the duo once again worked together. The Afro-Sambas were born.

A finalist for Brazil's 1996 Premio Sharp Awards (Brazil's Grammys)
