The Barber of Baghdad (Kanengiser)

The Tailor's Tale, The Lame Young Man and The Barber, The Barber of Baghdad, Bakbook, Al-Haddar, Bakbak, Al-Kuz, Al-Ashar, Shakashik, Finale

(edited and recorded by William Kanengiser on Echoes of The Old World)

"...technically interesting, with applications of campanella, slurs, and rasqueado. Recommended for those of you who are interested in and like Middle-Eastern music." - Gendai Guitar Magazine

"Full marks all round...a challenging solo...individualistic, not fitting into any box, redolent of the Middle East and the stories of Scheherazade. Hunt seems to have assimilated features of Arabian ud music, with a hint of flamenco and very little concession to the How to Write British Music Textbook. Its variety has a permeating fragmentary feel, but with a sense of unity about it all. It will require thought concerning interpretation and here is a bonus as things have gone, its hardly overplayed, and I think theres plenty of room left for manoeuvre for any advanced level players deciding to take it up. The music by and large falls well under the hands, so let's see whose concerts feature this in the next twelve months or so, see if players are quicker to programme it than the barber was to cut hair." - Chris Kilvington, Classical Guitar Magazine

"...Hunt's music reminds us of a Persian rug, with a concentric pattern design. In conclusion, this is still a very fine concert piece; twenty years ago, when the piece was composed, this kind of music (reminding me of similar approaches by Domeniconi - and even Brouwer in some pieces) had to be revolutionary." - Uros Dojcinovic, Classical Guitar Magazine
