Cello Suite 5, BWV 1011/995
[Solo Guitar]
Bach himself made an arrangement of the Cello Suite No. 5 BWV 1011 for lute (BWV 995) which can be utilised as orientation for a guitar transcription. In the opening section of the Prelude, T. Hoppstock however adopted the bass line progression from the cello version (as the guitar cannot always play the lowest notes of the lute register). In contrast, Hoppstock extended the second section of the Prelude marked Très Viste to form a three-voice fugue.
Other extensions/expansions can be found in the initial bars in both sections of the Allemande, in several bars of the repeat in the Courante and the complete da capo version of Gavotte I. In the Sarabande with its striking dissonant effects and occasionally ambig-uous harmonic transitions, the arranger could not resist the temptation to select an arrangement and fingerings which produce a continuous chordal interlacing of the notes.
