FERNANDO SOR - GUITAR WORKS - EDITED BY ERIK STENSTADVOLD
COMPLETE SET OF 15 VOLUMES (1172 PAGES)
A NEW STANDARD REFERENCE EDITION WHICH BELONGS IN VERY SERIOUS MUSIC LIBRARY
WHY A NEW EDITION?
It is now close on 50 years since Brian Jeffery gave guitarists what was then considered the first complete edition of the guitar works of Fernando Sor in a facsimile edition, a landmark publication in its time, greatly benefitting the guitar community.
The intervening four decades have seen much new research in historical guitar matters, and a re-assessment of many pertinent matters in regard to Sor’s music. A significant figure among today’s leading researchers is Erik Stenstadvold, a recognised authority on Fernando Sor’s music. Guitar Heritage is proud to have him as the editor of this important new critical edition.
This 1178 page edition in concert format (305mm x 230mm) in 14 volumes includes new and updated information about Sor and includes some little known and recently discovered works of his.
WHAT IS NEW? WHAT IS DIFFERENT TO SOME OF THE OTHER EDITIONS??
In as far as various other editions go, we take a different approach on several points which we concentrated on revising: We consider that the most reliable sources have not always been used, and that some important sources have been ignored, in part due to the policy of more than one or other editors' ‘reliance’, on the earliest editions as sources - a valid policy - but not always necessarily the optimal choice here in our opinion.
We have found it necessary to radically expand and revised Commentaries to cover situations that were previously not dealt with.
Revised treatment of grace notes, trills and turns.
Slurs & Glissandi – notation revised for consistency and completeness.
IN THE CASE OF SOME OF THE FACSIMILE EDITIONS
Many people like to play from facsimiles and there is a choice of editions here. However, there are instances where these have been tacitly enhanced or even ‘corrected’, usually due to poor legibility of the original. In this process ‘changes’ have been introduced, nearly impossible to detect. Again, we often disagree on the choice of the source.
WHAT WE OFFER
A new critical edition* of Sor’s known works for solo guitar and guitar duo (parts and full size study scores)
Musical text adapted for practical use by today’s guitar players.
Notation compliant with standard modern practice
Discreet identifiable editorial fingering added where considered appropriate
Historical notes and comprehensive documented critical commentaries.
DEFINITION OF A CRITICAL EDITION* IN THIS CASE
All available early sources have been considered and their possible connection to Sor examined on the basis of historical and text-critical criteria. The most suitable or reliable edition is chosen and the reason for thse choice is given. An edited text which conforms to a declared critical apparatus is prepared from that source. Relevant differences and other points of interest as well as differences between it and other sources are listed and any editorial interventions are graphically identifiable as such. Clearly identifiable and very limited editorial fingering has been judiciously added for both hands.
The guitar duos come with full-size study scores and separate parts (vols. 11-14). As an optional extra we offer a ‘pocket’ size score with all the duos (188 pages, 17 x 24 cms).
Each volume has its own thematic index with incipits and the pages include headers to assist navigation. We offer, at a special low price, an optional thematic index volume referenced to the complete edition, which is of practical use (order number GHE 896).
