The Spanish composer and pianist Isaac Albeniz (1860-1909) was one of the leading members of the Nationalist school that dominated Spanish music at the turn of the last century. Cordoba was the fourth in a collection of 5 songs for the piano inspired by different places in Spain, published in 1898 as Cantos de España (Op. 232).

The city of Cordoba is said to be Albeniz' favorite city, and is home to the famous Great Mosque. The music reflects the rich history of the city, both Christian and Moorish. Cordoba has been transcribed for Guitar by Miguel Angel. It has become one of the staples of the modern guitar repertoire.
