Dedicated to Shin-Ichi Fukuda

The title Hika , meaning threnody (funeral song) is the same name of a piece for violin and piano by Takemitsu from 1966. However, there is no relationship between this work and Brouwer's in terms of musical material. Listeners will be able to find more similarities between Brouwer's work and another by Takemitsu that has the words “in memoriam” as a subtitle.

Leo Brouwer was friends with Toru Takemitsu for many years and as a guitarist he premiered the first movement Night , Takemitsu's masterpiece, for alto flute and guitar, titled Toward the sea , in Toronto in 1981.
