[4 Guitars] [score & parts]

Thanks to its catchy melody and the famous guitar riff (bars 1-4), “I Shot The Sheriff” is one of the best-known reggae songs of all time. The melody in the 1st guitar (sections A, B and D) is kept rhythmically simple as it is meant to be played in higher positions (V, VII and X position). The 2nd, 3rd and 4th guitars stay in the I and II position and are very simple in terms of the melodic patterns but are more interesting as regards the rhythm so that chords, chorus parts, the typical bass line and some artful subtleties of the reggae accompaniment can be found sounding together. Section C is given over to a kind of written-out improvisation for the 2nd and 3rd guitars, which should take it in turns soloing and bring out the best in each other.
