“Composer bids adieu to guitar with large set”
This is a large volume of 33 pieces (Op. 300-333 inclusive, except missing Op. 309), and, if we’re to believe the note in the front of the book, these are perhaps his final works for guitar - which is quite unusual, as Kleynjans is only 66 - but the book says no more about that!
As it is, the volume contains a vast array of small character pieces, opening with a modest little Prelude in Dm, to a Tango, a Passacaille (with a run of artificial harmonies above the bass line for the last eight bars), and a Canon in the form of an attractive waltz. Every one of the pieces is dedicated to a person, a place, or item of fond memory. So we have a piece dedicated to a woman, called Sucre D'Orge (Barley Sugar), that has a lovely melody set in F with two main voices-one high, one low-over a nostalgie set of harmonies; another called Amertume (Bitterness) dedicated to another d'Oz composer, Jean-Marie Raymond, featuring a sad descending melody over a rocking 6/8 rhythm; and the final Theme and Variations Je Tire Ma Reverence, dedicated to all who have enjoyed Kleynjans’ music over the years and possibly the most difficult piece of the entire set.
There is so much to enjoy in this vast tome that anyone who loves this man’s music will surely not be disappointed.
