Selected Guitar Works
The recent re-discovery of Julian Arcas (1832-1882), accompanied by the need for an understanding of his many different facets as a guitarists, musician and concert artist, together with the availability of ample information and material now place us in an ideal position for a radical re-appraisal of the historical process behind the origins and development of the "modern" guitar. Shining a strong light through the mists and myths that have long enveloped the figure of Arcas - and, for that matter, also Llobet - must surely encourage us to now seriously reconsider the widely held and hitherto unchallenged opinion that Tarrega was the sole founder of the 'Modern Guitar School'; just as it should also help temper the notion that the leap forward in international concert performance, technical development and new repertoire took place solely with the advent of Andres Segovia.
