Variations on a Theme of Debussy
[Solo Guitar]
The genre of variation played a minor role in musical Impressionism (there is not a single surviving set of variations by Debussy or Ravel). Debussy’s Prelude “Des pas sur la neige” (Steps in the snow) is perfect for this purpose with its characteristic theme in a sequence of seconds and possessing a high recognition value. The concluding fugato blends the stricter contrapuntal form with freer fantasy-like passages and the work is brought to a close with the return of the theme – again in another new harmonisation.
With preface and fingerings by the composer!
