Variazioni, Op. 107 "The Harmonious Blacksmith"
[Solo Guitar]
The Harmonious Blacksmith with a complete facsimile of the first edition
F. Chrysander comments on the origin of the theme: "This melody, which with its five variations forms the end of the fifth suite, was traced back to a suggestion of a very peculiar kind. It is known under the name "The Harmonic Grobschmied" and bears this name Because Handel - so the story goes - when he was walking one day in the neighborhood of Cannons, was attacked by a rain shower and took shelter in the workshop of the blacksmith and church clerk Powell, here the blacksmiths are singing this song merrily and on the anvil heard a kind of sounding basic harmony strike."
